So why isn’t the Clapper Rail recovered and de-listed yet? Because there are so many species listed as threatened or endangered in the U.S. today only a little bit of funding and effort could be allocated to this Clapper Rail. Additionally, most of the expenditure for this bird by the state and Federal Governments has been by desk-bound staff covering the paperwork side of things.
WHERE TO GO
If you want to see a Light-footed Clapper Rail firsthand, go to the Chula Vista Nature Center and the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge by getting off the I5 at E Street in south San Diego Bay. The Nature Center has rails in an aviary whose young we put out into the little wetlands with few rails to try and help them along. Believe it or not, you can walk right into the rail aviary there and if you’re quiet and patient, you will see a Clapper Rail from just a few feet away. Sea World is also raising rails for us. Without these wonderful partners and the U.S. Navy, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish and Game and all of you whom have helped, the Light-footed Clapper Rail might not still be with us today. To the contrary, with the continuance of the Recovery efforts that have been mounted, in a few decade’s time I am confident that we will recover this rail.
